Shares in Chinese video streaming site Momo ( MOMO) plunged more than 20% in U.S. trading on Tuesday despite strong third quarter earnings beating analyst expectations.
Momo's third-quarter revenues surged 126%% year-on-year to USD354.5 million , beating broker estimates. Earnings per share soared 87.5% to $0.45 compared to $0.24 in the same period last year. Monthly Active Users (MAU) grew only 3.4% quarter-on-quarter and Benjamin Wu , Senior Analyst at Pacific Epoch, remains concerned about the company's ability to increase the number of people willing to pay for its live-streaming services:
MOMO is not doing well on expand audience and paying users in 2017. A stronger social media focus could guide traffic to its live streaming platform. It's 2018 perspective remains neutral as it's heavily relying on existing high-paying audience. Lastly, there is less potential to raise ARPU to sustain its growth.

However, the dip in shares could be a buying opportunity as Jefferies analyst Karen Chan given its attractive valuation of 11x FY18E P/E on 32% earnings CAGR, and incremental growth opportunity from advertising. The analyst expects a gradual increase in the number of monthly active users, while its 'Quick Chat +' messaging app should help convert them into paying ones in the fourth quarter of this year:

Long-tail users continue to engage in other social use cases as reflected by a 7% QoQ increase in VAS paying users to 4.8mn. "Quick Chat +" launched on Nov 6 should deliver upside to VAS (value added services) paying users in 4Q. Momo will look to diversify its PUGC (professionally curated user-generated content) offering through talent agency partnerships while broadening its video and audio-based social live streaming uses cases which we view as LT positive for brand building and user acquisition/retention.
Chan has a buy rating but has lowered her price target to USD50 a share from USD54 a share previously.
